Mini Aussie with Tails
Naturally, Mini Aussies and Australian Shepherds are born with long tails. However, there are some with partial bobs and mid length tails. Some countries where docking is allowed, breeders dock tails of the small puppies. Even when these pups are docked, their wagging movement of the hind end is noticeable.
Why are Mini Aussie Tails docked?
Among many reasons provided by various breeders, there are three main reasons for docking.
|To avoid damage to the tail||This reason is the most important and often discussed. Mini Aussies and Australian Shepherds are raised in rough areas with tall grass and tough weeds in the USA. Therefore, breeders dock their tails in order to reduce the risk of injury which will be painful.|
|To Maintain Breed Standard||Currently, selling Mini Aussies as pets is a common practice. So that, people consider the AKC standards more than ever. As a result, docking takes place in order to preserve original gene pools.|
|For Hygiene||Docking helps to maintain hygiene and lessens matting for Aussies and Mini Aussies.|
Therefore, it is less likely for Mini Aussies with tail to be noticed. However, if you prefer a Mini Aussie with tail, you can have one after explaining your necessity to a breeder.
How is Docking done?
Docking of the Mini Aussie tail can be done in two ways. First one is to band. And the other one is by surgery. When you band, an orthodontic band is placed over the end of the tail. You can do this once your puppy is 24-96 hours old. When you choose to band, you can get the result by 3 days as it cuts off the blood supply to the tail end.
Second method is the surgery. Veterinarians cut tails using hemostats, the surgical scissors.
The other method is by surgery. With larger breeds, this method suits well and there is no need of stiches for most of the cases.
Is docking hurt?
As docking makes the tail disjoint from the dog, it actually hurts and causes discomfort. But the pain will vanish within 3-5 days. Since this process takes place during the first few days of the pup’s life, some pups even do not know whether they were docked or not. And also, you need to clarify that there is no affect on the weight gain, balance or communication of the pup due to the docking process. However, if docking has to be done during its adulthood, it feels distressed, and the healing process is painful.
How to get a Mini Aussie with a Tail?
Some Mini Aussies are born with long tails, and some are not. Because some pups carry the gene by birth and have naturally boobed tails. However, you can still have a Mini Aussie with a tail. All what you have to do is express your needs clearly and early. Therefore, make sure you inform the breeder of your requirement before the pup is born. Most often, you will have to pay the full amount for the puppy before you actually have him.
