Linen is a popular fabric material taken from the plant flax. Although flax shares similar attributes with cotton, it differs from cotton due to cotton being fluffy white balls and linen being fibers. Therefore, soaking out linen can cause damages to the fabric. As linen does not stretch it often tends to get wrinkles. Therefore, wrinkles in linen are nothing new. You can prevent them by letting the cloth dry in natural air or in dry clean.

Both processes are quite similar. The simple process for unshrink linen goes as follows.

Things you need:

1. Tub filled with lukewarm water.

2. Soap/ conditioner/ shampoo/ laundry detergent

  1. First fill up the washtub with lukewarm water and apply soap or conditioner to it.
  2. Next let linen soak in the water for 30 minutes and this will ease off loosening fibers.
  3. Then you can squeeze the water out.
  4. You can remove excess water by wrapping the cloth inside a dry towel. At this stage, fabric needs to be damp, not wet.
  5. After a while remove the fabric from the towel and let it rest on another dry towel.
  6. Finally, try pulling the fabric gently in all directions to stretch and hang it up to dry.

What is stretch linen?

As we learnt earlier, 100% linen is not stretchy. The extent to which linen stretch depends on its combination with other fibers like spandex, elastane and lycra.

Uses of stretch linen.

Some companies stretch linen before manufacture. This is required in designing summer wear and athletic wear like swim coverups. Linen makes a perfect choice for summer wear because its breathability is absent in fabrics like lycra, spandex and elastane.

Can linen be stretched?

Simply yes. Linen contains strong fibers that make Linen durable. When it is wet, Linen gets stronger. Due to the comparatively low elasticity of Linen, pure fibers do not stretch. Instead they can break if they bed or fold.

Another positive answer. First, you need to soak the linen overnight in a blend of gallon of water and 1 cup of vinegar or ½ cup of baking soda.

You can safely dry Linen using the dryer if you can stick to low temperatures. However, the safe method is to dry clean or to let to dry in open air. If you tumble dry your linen cloths, remove them from the dryer when slightly damp. In that way, you can avoid it becoming stiff.
