Crested Geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliates) are subtropical lizards. They are naturally nocturnal. Hence you may think that they avert from light. But that is wrong because the lighting is essential for their appetite, activity improvement, seasonal cycling and circadian rhythms. As per the UV tool, Crested Gecko require 10 hours of illumination in winter and 14 hours of lighting during summer. Make sure that you don’t disturb them with colour lights like red, blue or any other at night because Gecko eyes adjust to the dark perfectly. Further, nightly drops in temperature are ideal for reducing heat.
Geckos are sensitive to the temperature in the environment they survive. They can live within 60% to 80% humidity. Therefore, keep in mind how important it is to provide various ranges of temperatures. Intense temperature values like 290C may be likely to result in heatstroke and stress. Temperature below 220C can cause illnesses, lethargy and poor appetite.
The following temperature categorization is guidance for Crested Gecko lovers.
- Night- time temperature — 65-72°F (18-22°C)
- Cool area (bottom of enclosure) —70-75°F (21-24°C)
- Basking area (top of enclosure) — 82-85°F (28-29°C)
When keeping a Gecko, one must remember them as ectotherms that are unable to produce heat for themselves. Therefore, Crested Gecko are in need of absorbing heat from natural sources like sunlight. The insufficiency of necessary heat can badly affect the metabolism and digestion of Geckos.
Where to keep Crested Geckos?
Due to the capability of maintaining proper humidity, terrariums, also known as vivarium and tanks, are smart choices to keep your Crested Geckos. If not for the humidity problem related to screen cages/ mesh cages, they are also a fine place for Geckos. You have to make sure that they are getting enough ventilation, no matter which cage you choose.
The benefit of vivarium plants
Vivarium plants and mosses can naturally give off moisture or during the process of photosynthesis. What happens here is the transpiration; when the water vapour is released. Hence the leaves of the plants cool down. It is OK to keep either natural or artificial plants when designing a Gecko terrarium. However, using natural plants is more essential and useful as they help to increase humidity. And it is necessary to choose plants that do not grow too big for the terrarium.
Humidity plays an essential role in Crested geckos’ lives. As mentioned above, you can maintain 60% to 80% humidity by daily misting and continue to keep the Gecko hydrated. The terrarium humidity depends on several factors including the kind of substrate you use, the type of enclosure, the choice in vivarium plants, the region you’re living in and the general humidity in your house.
Misty pressure sprayer
You can use the pressure sprayer to do misting easily. Once done, Gecko are likely to drink from the given dishes or lick water droplets off plants. Within two times of misting, you need to verify that earlier misting has dried out at least 40% to 50%. This is because too much wetness can cause Gecko sick. The frequency of misting depends on the humidity of the environment where your Gecko lives. When misting the terrarium, do not use filtered, softened or distilled water, but natural water rich with minerals.
How to maintain the proper humidity level?
If you wish to measure the humidity level for better quality maintenance, use a hygrometer or Zoo Med Combometer. A hygrometer can measure humidity in a terrarium. A general hygrometer comes in either digital or analogue form. Some devices are designed by combining both hygrometer and a thermometer. However, even an analogue hygrometer is enough to start with.
What happens if humidity is too high or too low?
Failing to ensure the required humidity level means either lower humidity below the average level or higher humidity above the expected average level. Constant higher humidity levels cause health problems. Consistent lower humidity level may result in shedding problem and dehydration problems.
Benefits of humidity level of 50%
Even though the ideal humidity level fluctuates between 60% to 80%, sometimes you can let it drop to 50% too because the growth of bacterium and fungal is prevented when the humidity remains in fifty per cent. When you keep Corn snake morphs as a pet you can also apply same theories.
